Chapter Nine

Tucker

The minute Joey placed his hand in mine, I felt like I won the first race in a multi-sports event. Sure, I hadn’t taken the grand prize yet, but this was a step in the right direction. I saw his indecision play across his face, and then the minute he’d made his decision, his jaw clenched with determination. He was going to give me a chance. That was all I needed. The opportunity to show him how good I would be to him. How awesome we could be together.

“Um…” Joey’s face flushed, and I belatedly realized how close I’d drawn him to me when helping him up.

I’d known he was smaller than me—daintier even—but the top of his head only came to my shoulder, and I wanted to pull him all the way in. Let him lean on my strength, prove to him that I could shoulder his burdens, but I didn’t want to overwhelm him. Stepping back took herculean effort, but I didn’t let go of his hand. We were in this together, and now that he’d taken this step, I'd keep him by my side. I wasn’t worried that he might waver so much as I didn’t want him to doubt my sincerity and that I wasn’t going to change my mind. “So, where should we go?” He peered up at me quietly, but I saw something in his expression that told me he knew exactly where he wanted to go, but he was scared to ask, so I guessed. “To The Tap?”

He wrinkled his nose. I bit back a smile. The last thing I needed was for him to figure out how adorable I found that with his cute button nose. “I don’t have to work tonight, so I’d rather not.”

“Okay, then where? Don’t tell me you don’t care either because I can tell you’re thinking something.”

He inhaled, and on the exhale, mumbled quickly, “Can we go to your house so I can see it?”

“You wanna see my house?”

“Yeah, I mean, you’ve seen mine?”

I quirked a brow. “Are we really playing if you show me yours, I’ll show you mine? Because I have to tell you, cutie pie, you’re moving a little faster than I expected.”

He giggled, and I was done. I’d heard Joseph make that same sound before, and I’d gone out of my way to make it happen again and again after. He’d always tried to be so professional, but that damn giggle had endeared him to me. Age wasn’t something that I gave two shits about, but I’d really thought he was a soft-spoken older man, and he was working for me, so I hadn’t pushed. Now I wished I had. In that moment, the Joseph-Joey disconnect completely evaporated, and I squeezed his hand. Glad that I’d kept this connection.
